Most likely, someone on the team had ties to him or liked what they saw and was giving him a chance to showcase his talent in the preseason. That allowed him to have some tape to evaluate by the other 31 teams, which is why he had 18 carries. They most likely told him this when signing him, it really was them just looking out for him.
