Although he lost a position battle for the Week 1 starting QB job to Gardner Minshew before the 2024 regular season commenced, O'Connell ultimately managed to start seven games for the Raiders last year. However, O'Connell will already be 27 years old in early September, and it's becoming pretty evident in this stage of his development that he's more likely on a career backup trajectory than projected to become the centerpiece of a pro offense. Incoming GM John Spytek and coach Pete Carroll acted accordingly when they traded for veteran Geno Smith, who's now locked into the QB1 role for Las Vegas ahead of O'Connell and rookie sixth-rounder Cam Miller.
